News - Ruling party trying to politicise Independence Day: BNP
Dhaka, Mar 26 (UNB) - BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday alleged that the ruling Awami League is trying to politicise the Independence Day by obstructing the opposition from paying homage to war heroes.

”The ruling party goons swooped on BNP leaders and workers when they went to pay tributes to the Liberation War heroes at the National Mausoleum, Savar today,” he said.

He was addressing a gathering before inaugurating a ‘flag procession’ of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the associate student wing of BNP.

Fakhrul said, “It seems that it’s (National Mausoleum) is their (ruling AL’s) paternal property and no other can show respect to the war heroes there.”

JCD brought out the flag procession from in front of the BNP central office at Naya Paltan in the afternoon, marking the Independence and National Day.

The BNP leader said police obstructed opposition leader Khaleda Zia’s vehicle in the morning when she started for Savar National Mausoleum. “Nothing can be more shameful than this,”   he said.

Protesting the incident, he said, “Condemning such an incident is not enough, we’ll have to dislodge this government. All will have to be united at the call of Khaleda Zia to oust this repressive government,” Fakhrul said.

JCD president Sultan Salahuddin Tuku presided over the pre-procession brief rally while general secretary Amirul Islam Alim conducted it.

Later, the JCD brought out the procession carrying small national flags and paraded through Kakrail, Shantinagar, Malibagh, Mouchak before ending at Moghbazar Crossing.

The processionists chanted various anti-government slogans.
