Dhaka, Mar 28 (UNB) - A seven-day Thai food festival and cultural show began at Sonargaon Hotel in the city on Wednesday.
The three-day ‘Thai Trade Show 2012’ that will begin on Thursday was also inaugurated simultaneously.
Commerce Minister GM Quader and Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Faruk Khan jointly inaugurated both the events in the evening.
Thai Trade Centre and Thai Airways International, Dhaka jointly organised the show in association with the hotel.
Charge d’ Affaires of the Thai Embassy in Dhaka Suwapong Sirison and Director of Thai Trade Centre Usa Wijarun were, among others, present at the function.
A team of professional Thai chefs from Bangkok will prepare Thai cuisine at the food festival to bring in the real flavours of Thailand.
Some of the exclusive dishes in the extended menu are Tom yam soup, mixed vegetable and sour soup with shrimp, green chicken curry, and sautéed beef with red curry. A group of Thai dancers will also perform Thai dance every day.
Talking to journalists after the inauguration of the events, Faruk Khan said Bangladesh would soon arrange on-arrival visas for the citizens of more countries.
“Currently, people from 49 countries enjoy on-arrival visa facilities. We’ve finalised things with the Foreign Ministry.”
He said the flow of tourists is much higher than the previous year. Khan, however, did not tell the figure.
GM Quader said the government is sincerely working to enhance export for minimising trade imbalance.
“Export has increased by 40 percent during 2009-2011 while the growth was 13 percent in February …our target is to achieve 15 percent growth.”
