News - Nahid urges philanthropists to help orphans
Dhaka, Apr 2 (UNB) - Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid Monday urged philanthropists and well-off people to come forward to help the orphans improve their lifestyle and ensure their basic rights.

“Orphans are among the most vulnerable people in any society. They are the most helpless among the helpless people. We should not forget that they have every right to lead a decent life as human being,” he told the inaugural session of a training course in the capital.

Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO under the Education Ministry in collaboration with ISESCO (Islamic Educational and Scientific and Cultural Organisation) Headquarters and ISESCO Regional Office organised the four-day training course on the Educational Qualification Supervisors of Institutions for Orphans at Banbeis Bhaban.

Education secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, representative of ISESCO Dr M Yusnan Hazi Yusof and BNCU secretary Chowdhury Mufad Ahmad, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Nahid said according to the Islamic faith, the Muslims have responsibility to show benevolence and care for the orphans. If one does not show compassion and tenderness to the orphans, one is not a true Muslim.

“Not only Islam, most religions including Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity- call for kindness and sympathy towards orphans.”

The Education Minister said the present government is committed to stand beside the orphans and destitute with all possible supports.

Nahid said currently there are 85 government orphanages in the country. Besides, there are many privately run orphanages. Many of these orphanages are run by religious organisations depending completely on the generosity of the community and well-to-do people.

“We want more and more people to come forward to support the ongoing efforts of the government and the community to fulfill our responsibility towards the orphans,” he said.

Some 30 experts and participants from Morocco, Malaysia, Maldives, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Bangladesh are participating in the four-day training course.
