
Dhaka, Apr 5 (UNB) – Several hundred slum dwellers who were evicted from Karail in the city on Wednesday barricaded Gulshan-Mohakhali-Airport road on Thursday morning, protesting the government action.
Traffic on the busy road remained disrupted due to the blockade since 9:30 am, causing immense sufferings to the commuters.
On information, police rushed in but could not remove the blockade till filing of this report at about 12 noon. The protesters said they will withdraw the barricade only when local MP HM Ershad arrives at the spot and assures that they would be rehabilitated in the Karail slum.
A team of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) with the help of law enforcers evicted some 250 families from their shanties at Karail slum in the city’s Banani area on Wednesday noon.
The evicted slum dwellers gathered at the Mohakhali T&T College ground this (Thursday) morning and held a meeting over there.
Later, they took to the streets and put barricade on the Gulshan-Mohakhali-Airport road, disrupting vehicular movement.
Additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
