Eminent citizens for not evicting slum dwellers without rehabilitation

Dhaka, Apr 7 (UNB) - Country’s eminent citizens have called upon the government not to evict the slum dwellers without their proper rehabilitation.

The High Court issued a directive not to evict the slum dwellers without rehabilitation, they said in a joint statement on Saturday, urging the government to comply with the court order.

They said the urban poor people work at different sectors, including garment. City life cannot be kept running without them.

“Sudden eviction of the slum dwellers without rehabilitation will create social unrest. So the matter should be taken into consideration,” read the statement.

The signatories to the statement include Syed Abul Moksud, Professor Nazrul Islam, Engineer Sheikh Mohammad Shahidullah, Professor MM Akash, Anu Mohammad, Rubayet Ferdous, Abu Naser Khan, Dr Dibalok Singh, AN Rasheda, Rokeya Kabir and Engineer M Shamsul Alam.
