News - IO exposes Sayedee’s dubious identity
Dhaka, Apr 11 (UNB) - The investigation officer on Wednesday ‘exposed’ before the International Crimes Tribunal the dubious act of detained war crimes accused Maulana Delwar Hossain Sayedee, nayeb-e-ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, identifying him in various names appropriate to a particular situation.

While making his testimony for the fourth consecutive day, IO ASP M Helal Uddin referred to some documents in support of his statement which the tribunal recorded as material exhibits.

According to the documents, Sayedee put pen to paper as Abu Nayem Mohammad overwriting with Delwar Hossain Sayedee while filling the application form for appearing in Alim examination in 1960. Besides, his age was penned through by 19 years and one month from 15 years and three months.

While making affidavit during the submission of nomination paper for contesting polls from Pirojpur-1 constituency in the 2008 parliamentary elections, Sayedee wrote his name along with signature as Allama Delwar Hossain Sayedee, the highest educational qualification as Alim (equivalent to Higher Secondary Certificate-HSC) and his profession as an author.

Sayedee’s income tax return submitted to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) shows his name as Maulana Delwar Hossain Sayedee.

In his deposition, IO Helal also submitted paper clippings of 87 different local dailies over accused Sayedee’s horrendous role allegedly perpetrated during the Liberation War in 1971 at Parerhat in Pirojpur district.

Earlier, as the three-member tribunal, headed by Justice M Nizamul resumed, the defence lawyers for the accused appeared and assisted the tribunal’s proceedings.

On Tuesday, they walked out in protest against the tribunal’s order that had recorded the 1971 foreign newspaper clippings as material evidence pushing the trial proceedings into a standoff.

The tribunal adjourned hearing until Thursday.
