Bagerhat, Apr 12 (UNB) - An election tribunal here on Thursday declared null and void the nomination of Mongla Port Municipality Mayor Julfikar Ali and annulled the 2011 election results as he concealed information in his affidavit.
M Abu Shamim Azad, the judge of the election tribunal and joint district judge, also asked the Election Commission to cancel the results of the winning candidate Julfikar and hold a fresh election for the mayoral post of the municipality within 90 days.
Julfikar, a BNP-backed candidate, won the election held on January 13, 2011 defeating AL-supported candidate Abdus Salam.
Court sources said Salam on January 20 filed a case with the tribunal against Julfikar seeking reelection to the mayoral post of the municipality.
The complainant alleged that Julfikar hid information in his affidavit submitted to the EC along with his nomination papers and thus violated the election code of conduct.
After examining the witnesses and relevant documents, the election tribunal pronounced the judgment.
Contacted, Julfikar said he would file an appeal with the higher court against the judgment.
