Dhaka, Apr 16 (UNB) – Bangladesh Polytechnic Teachers Association (BPTA) and Bangladesh Polytechnic Teachers Council (BPTC) will go on an indefinite work abstention from May 22 next to press home their eight-point demand.

The BPTA and BPTC made the announcement at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Monday.

BPTA president Mohammad Idris Ali read out a written statement at the press conference.

Idris Ali said although the government said it has given special importance to technical education, an acute teacher crisis is hampering educational activities.

“Although 50-80 percent posts of teachers remain vacant, the government has introduced a second-shift programme in polytechnics institutes. So, the quality of education has fallen,” he said.

Their demands include regularising the jobs of senior teachers, giving 100 percent salary for the second shift, appointment of new teachers, creating more work opportunities for diploma engineers and introducing Master’s course in the Technical Teachers Training College.

BPTC president Fakir Mohammad Abdul Mannan, BPTA vice-president Mustafa Hossain, general secretary Nirmal Chandra Sen and BPTC vice president Abdur Rahim were present at the press conference.
