Dhaka, Apr 19 (UNB) - BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has accused the government’s special force of kidnapping BNP organising secretary and former lawmaker M Ilias Ali.
“Though the government has assured us of rescuing Ilias within the shortest possible time, we can't be sanguine about it,” he told reporters after a meeting with Home Minister Shahara Khatun at her office on Thursday.
Fakhrul led a 6-member delegation and submitted a memorandum to the Home Minister.
The BNP leader alleged that a good number of incidents of disappearance happened in the recent past and observed that the disappearance of a leader like Ilias Ali is a bad omen for democracy and constructive politics.
About the meeting with the Home Minister, Fakhrul said they have demanded immediate return of Ilias Ali and his driver.
State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, who was present at the meeting, said the government was “embarrassed” following the “disappearance” of Ilias Ali.
He said that law enforcing and intelligence agencies have already been asked to track down the perpetrators.
Tuku said the government is very sincere to find out the missing Ilias and his driver.
The Home Minster had already visited the residence of Ilias Ali on Wednesday night at the instruction of the Prime Minister.
Ilias Ali and his driver have been missing since Tuesday night soon after he came out from his Banani house in the capital.
Later, Banani police found Ilias Ali’s abandoned car in front of South Point School and College near Amtali crossing at city’s Mahakhali at about 1:30 am on Wednesday.
BNP's standing committee members M K Anwar, Nazrul Islam Khan, Brig Gen (retd) Hannan Shah, vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman, and Shammi Akhter MP were on the delegation.
