UNITED NATIONS (AP/UNB) - Sudan's U.N. envoy is denying South Sudan's announcement of a withdrawal from the oil-rich town of Heglig, saying the Sudanese army routed the South's troops.
Ambassador Daffa-Alla Elhag Ali Osman told reporters Friday that "our heroic Sudanese armed forces have chased out the aggressors from Heglig."
South Sudanese troops took control of the disputed oil town last week, sparking condemnation from the U.N., U.S. and Britain.
South Sudan's President Salva Kiir announced earlier Friday his country will withdraw from Heglig.
But Osman said "It is not a withdrawal. We ran them out."
He stressed that Sudan wants peace, will not cross the border and is ready to negotiate with South Sudan provided the government "comes to its senses."
