
Sylhet, Apr 23 (UNB) – Two people, including a Jubo Dal activist, were shot dead and over 200 injured in a fierce clash between pro-hartal activists and police at Biswanath upazila headquarters on Monday afternoon.
One of the deceased was identified as Monwar Hossain, 26. The second victim, a young man, could not yet be identified.
However, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam at a press briefing in Dhaka claimed that two BNP men were killed in police firing in the upazila.
Witnesses said the clash broke out when police obstructed pro-hratal activists from bringing out a procession at Basia Bridge in the upazila headquarters at about 2pm.
Later, several thousand people from nearly 15 villages of the upazila equipped with rods and sticks attacked the local police station.
Fearing danger, the on-duty policemen fired several hundred gunshots, triggering a fierce clash that left two killed and over 200 injured.
Of the injured, Monwar succumbed to his bullet injuries on the way to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital. And police recovered the bullet-hit body of the unidentified young man from beside Jameya Mohammadia Madrasah in the upazila headquarters.
The clash left at least 15 cops injured.
Of the injured, 10 people, including Biswanath Police Station officer-in-charge (investigation) Chand Miah was taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
The agitated pro-hartal activists also set fire to the upazila parishad building, damaging its valuables and documents. They also attacked the residence of the UNO and ransacked his car.
On information, additional police, Rab and BGB members rushed to the spot and controlled the situation at about 4pm.
Meanwhile, the hartal supporters in different upazila areas of the district ransacked at least 50 vehicles, burned at least 20 vehicles during the hartal hours while police picked up at least 50 people.
Ilias Ali, a former MP from Biswanath, and BNP’s organising secretary, and his driver remained missing since April 17 midnight.
BNP blamed security agencies for the mysterious disappearance of Ilias Ali, an allegation denied by the government.
The main opposition BNP enforced a nationwide daylong shutdown for the second day on Monday to press for the return Ilias Ali and his driver, Ansar.
