News - Black money not acceptable: Mirza Aziz
Dhaka, Apr 23 (UNB) – The possible provision for whitening black money in the next national budget is not morally acceptable in any way and it will not bring anything good for the economy, renowned economist AB Mirza Azizul Islam said on Monday.

“I had never supported black money…it couldn’t bring anything positive result in the past. Black money can’t be supported in any way,” the former finance adviser to caretaker government told UNB over phone.

Mirza Aziz said the tendency of earning black money would grow among people if the black money is allowed to whiten in the next budget. “It’s discriminatory and immoral.”

There is rumor that the government will allow whitening black money in the next national budget, too.

On Sunday, Finance Minister AMA Muhith at pre-budget discussion with the Economic Reporters Forum (ERF), however, said he is not sure whether there will be any scope for whitening black money in the budget for fiscal 2012-13.

“We had given the opportunity to whiten black money in our first year (2009-10), not in the second year (2010-11). And the opportunity to whiten black money was there in the stock market in the third year (2011-12). What will happen this year, I can’t tell you right now,” he said.

The Finance Minister also said he was personally against giving any chance to whiten black money. “But democracy is … the art of compromise,” he said.

Muhith said it is not easy to put plug on the source of black money. “It’ll continue for many days as the remittance is the main source of black money.
When people remit money from abroad through banking channel, we allow those without asking any question of its source,” he said.
