5 dead in tribal clashes in southern Libya
TRIPOLI, Libya, Apr 24 (AP/UNB) - A doctor in the Libyan town of Kufra says five people have been killed in three days of clashes between rival tribes. The town is near Libya's southern border with Chad.
Taher Abo Bakr al-Tabuwi says clashes erupted when the African Tabu tribe confronted the powerful Arab tribe of al-Zwia after a Tabu man was found dead Saturday.
A battle between the two tribes left more than 100 people dead in Kufra in February.
Tabu leaders threatened last month to declare their own state to protect their people.
The Tabu and other African tribes were the original inhabitants of south Libya. The Tabu were heavily suppressed under ousted leader Moammar Gadhafi.
Libyan officials say they sent a team Monday to investigate the incident and try to resolve the dispute.
