Dhaka, Apr 25 (UNB)-The High Court on Wednesday asked the government to stop within 24 hours the unapproved construction works of a building by the Destiny Group on Cox’s Bazar beach.
Passing the interim order following a public interest litigation writ petition, an HC division bench comprising Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice Jahangir Hossain also asked the respondents, including the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and Mayor of Cox’s Bazar and Sadar thana Officer-in Charge to submit a progress report on compliance by May 6.
Besides, the HC further asked to appear Majharul Islam, the project engineer, in person before it on May 5 to explain the position in the matter.
After the interim orders, the HC issued rule upon the government to explain in three weeks why its inaction to protect the environment should not be declared illegal and why direction should not be given to remove the construction materials.
Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) filed the PIL writ petition.
Advocate Manzill Murshid appeared for the petitioner while assistant attorney general Yadia Zaman for the government.
