
Dhaka, Apr 25 (UNB) – Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Wednesday stressed creating government capacity in coal to go for more coal-based power generation to meet the growing demand for electricity in the country.
“Don’t give up the hope on coal as we’ve taken steps for moving into coal-based power plants,” he said while addressing a pre-budget meeting, titled ‘Demand for special allocation for Rangpur Division in the national budget,’ at the National Press Club in the afternoon.
The Finance Minister said that the government is moving towards coal-based power generation and “by 2020, we should have a target for 30 percent supply of coal for power generation. For this, we should have supply of our own coal.”
He also cited that steps are underway to go for coal-based power plants in Chittagong and Khulna.
Chaired by State Minister for Primary and Mass Education M Motahar Hossain, State Minister for Land Mostafizur Rahman Fizar was the key discussant at the meeting. The members of parliament of Rangpur Division also spoke on the occasion.
Responding to the lawmakers’ demand for construction and upgradation of roads in the Rangpur Division, Muhith said it would not be possible for going towards new roads. Instead, the existing roads could be upgraded.
He noted that the density of roads in Bangladesh is the highest in the region and focus would have to be given on their development.
Citing different steps taken by the present government for the development of the railway sector, the Finance Minister said a project is likely soon for the modernization of the Parbatipur railway workshop.
He underscored the need for going for more corn and beet cultivation in the North Bengal region citing their huge potential.
Urging to remove the regional disparity, State Minister for Land Mustafizur Rahman Fizar underscored the need for adoption of a mega plan for coal and stone extraction.
The lawmakers in the meeting stressed the need for going for coal-based power generation, construction of a bridge on Balasi-Bahadurabad point, BMRI of the sugar mills situated in Rangpur Division, upgradation of the Banglabandha Land Port, construction of more silos, taking initiative for setting up more agro-based industries, construction of cold storage, setting up urea fertilizer factory and to discourage cultivation of tobacco.
