Dhaka, Apr 26 (UNB) – A new 50-bed diarrhoea treatment ward in Lalbag’s Dhaka Shishu Mohanagar Hospital was opened on Thursday.
Dr Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, MP formally opened the ward that has been set up to cope with the sharp rise in people suffering from diarrhoeal diseases in the area.
Dhaka City Corporation (South) and the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare jointly set up the ward while ICDDR,B is providing technical support.
MSF Belgium is also providing technical as well as financial support, according to a press release of ICDDR,B (International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh).
ICDDR,B acting executive director Dr Abbas Bhuiya and MSF-Belgium’s Jenny Soderberg along with other senior officials from the two organizations were also present.
In early April a sharp increase in the number of people suffering from diarrhoeal diseases across Dhaka prompted ICDDR,B and the Directorate General of Health Services to join hands in establishing three diarrhoea treatment centres within existing government facilities in Dhaka, Tongi and Gazipur.
At each centre, ICDDR,B’s experts will prepare the treatment protocol and train doctors and staff. They will also advise on infrastructure improvements.
The first of these new treatment centres has already been established in Tongi Sadar Hospital. The third centre will be established shortly in Dhaka Mohanagar General Hospital.
Each year during the months of March and April, ICDDR,B’s Dhaka Hospital and Mirpur Treatment Centre receive a high number of patients suffering from diarrhoea.
While almost all the patients leave after receiving adequate treatment, many more are unable to make the long journey from different parts of the city and often succumb to severe dehydration before they are able to receive life saving treatment.
