Jahangirnagar University, Apr 27, (UNB) – The authorities of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Friday banned any kind of siege programme on the campus as pro- and- anti-VC teachers took opposing stance over the demand of the resignation of JU VC Prof. Sharif Enamul Kabir.

Teachers, disloyal to the VC, under the banner of ‘Shikkhak Somaj’ have been continuing demonstration for the last few months to press home their demands, including the resignation of the VC.

They laid a siege to the VC's residence protesting at the arrest of two JU teachers and demanding his resignation. They were continuing their siege that began at 2 am on April 25 as of 9 pm today.

Meanwhile, pro-VC teachers with the help of police rescued the VC at 11 am today.

The university syndicate at an emergency meeting held on Friday afternoon at the VC's residence imposed a ban on siege to the university offices and residential halls.

The syndicate also decided to close the university for one month from May 5 to Jun 5 on the occasion of summer vacation.

It also formed a three-member committee headed by JU treasurer Prof. Nasiruddin to investigate the incident of the assault on Botany department chairman Prof. Mohammad Ali Akand, a teacher loyal to the VC.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within seven working days.

Additional police forces have been deployed on the campus.

Meanwhile, over 50 activists of Bangladesh Chattra League led by Sheikh Shariful Islam Sharif of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall brought out a procession at about 1 pm chanting slogans against the anti-VC teachers.

At one stage, they damaged stage called ‘Upacharja Protyakkhan Manch’ set up by Shikkhak Somaj’ in front of university administrative building and set ablaze their banners.

Shikkhak Somaj held a press conference in front of the VC’s residence where they said they would continue their siege till Saturday when fresh programmes will be announced.
