News - 10 killed as storms hit 4 southwestern dists
Dhaka, Apr 28 (UNB) - Storms swept villages in different upazilas of Jessore, Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat districts, leaving 10 people killed and 20 others injured on Saturday.

UNB Benapole Correspondent says: farmers Sumon Ali, 22, was instantly killed and Mizanur Rahman, 35, injured by a thunderbolt while they were working at Sharifpur field at Basatpur village of Bagachra in Sharsha upazila in Jessore during storms in the afternoon.

Mizanur was admitted to a local hospital in critical condition.

In Khulna, lightning strike killed Nasimul Ghani Ramjan, 20, an HSC 2nd year student of Khulna Navy School & College, and injured his batch-mate Farzana Ramjan during thunderstorm on the bank of the Bhairab River on the compound of Subodh Chandra Hostel of Govt BL College in the city`s Daulatpur area at 9am.

Badly burned Farzana, HSC (Science Dept) 2nd year student of the city`s Govt Baira Women`s College and daughter of Land Ministry official Ramjan Ali of Barakpur of Kotalipara of Gopalganj district, was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital which referred her to Khalishpur Fair Health Clinic, which specializes in burn injury treatment.

Both used to reside in separate flats in Khalishpur Housing Area.

In Satkhira: Lightning strikes killed five people while another one was killed in a wall collapse as tornado hit different villages in Debhata, Patkelghata, Ashashuni and sadar upazilas in the morning.

The nor`wester also left 18 injured.

Daylabourer Nazmul Hossain, 25, was instantly killed and 15 co-workers injured, many of them seriously, as thunderbolt struck them when they were working defying storm under an employment-generating project at Najirer Gher in Debhata at 9-30 am.

The injured were admitted to local hospital.

At the same time thunderbolt hit and killed Thakur Dasi, 35, wife of Tarapado Das at Shanta village while Farida Begum, 50, was instantly killed as a big wall collapsed on her in the yard of their house at Norarcharkuni village. She was the wife of Abdul Wadud.

Patkelghata Thana officer Helal Uddin said lightning strike knocked down Abdul Jabbar, 40, of Chomarkhali village of Tala upazila when he was working in Patkelghata area leaving him dead on the spot.

Ashashuni thana OC Abdul Bari said thunderbolt struck Ranjita Khatun, 28, when she was working at a cropland at Beula village in Ashashuni upazila in the morning.

Abdul Hannan, 22, son of Jalal Uddin was instantly killed and three other people were injured in lightning strike as nor`wester lashed Debnagar village in sadar upazila in the morning.

The injured were rushed to Sadar Hospital in critical condition.

In Bagerhat: Abul Kalam Hawlader, 50, was killed when a wall of a shop collapsed on him during the storm at Gobordia village in sadar upazila at 9 am.

The storm also damaged 50 houses and standing Boro crops at Arjun Bahar and Kapalibandar villages in the upazila.

Meanwhile, Selim Sheikh, 28, was killed as a thunderbolt struck him at his cow-shed at Kathalia Danga village in Fakirhat upazila almost at the same time.
