LONDON, APR 28 (AP/UNB) - A police commander says he feared a life threatening situation when heavily armed police officers sealed off a stretch of central London's shopping district.

Commander Adrian Hanstock said Saturday the operation the day before in Tottenham Court Road was necessary amid concern a suspect was carrying flammable liquids and other dangerous items.

A three-hour-long standoff took place after a man burst into the offices of a company that offers tests for truck drivers. Office equipment was hurled from windows and staff at businesses nearby said they believed he was carrying explosives.

Police are continuing to question a 48-year-old man detained at the scene.

Hanstock acknowledged the show of force from police had shocked some, but insisted it was "absolutely necessary."
