Dhaka, Apr 29 (UNB) - Ganoforum president Dr Kamal Hossain on Sunday called upon the government to refrain from making any sweeping remarks on the current investigation into the disappearance of BNP organizing secretary M Ilias Ali along with his driver since the night of April 17.
Addressing a press conference at his Bailey Road residence in the city, he expressed grave concern over the disappearance of Ilias Ali and some other recent incidents including the killing of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar-Meherun Runi.
Dr Kamal said any remarks by the executives of the state organ that might impede the investigation process are not desirable. “Besides, it also puts unwarranted pressure on the investigation officers in digging out the facts of the incidents.”
On the investigation of Ilias’ disappearance, he said everybody wants to see a quick and successful completion of the investigation.
The Ganoforum president said the government should disclose the progress reports on all the recent killings and the incidents of enforced disappearance to let the countrymen know from time to time about the outcome.
“Law and order situation is gradually getting deteriorated centering Ilias Ali’s disappearance. Neutrality of the law is being hampered due to political interference… the country is being deprived of rule of law,” he said.
On hartal issue, Dr Kamal said there are alternatives to hartal. “Time has come to bring changes in the political culture. It’s the duty of all to ensure security of public life and property.”
He said the government would fail to perform its constitutional duties if it cannot provide security to public life and property.
Asked about the possibility of another 1/11, Dr Kamal said the government has still 18 months’ time and the people will judge the government’s rights and wrongs.
Criticizing political clashes in the educational institutions and politicization everywhere, he said there is urgent need of democratic reforms within the political parties for the wellbeing of the country.
