Dhaka, Apr 29 (UNB) - BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday alleged that the government was conspiring afresh over M Ilias Ali issue instead of returning him.
Fakhrul made the allegation while addressing a press conference at the BNP central office at Nayapaltan at 5pm following their first-day countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal.
The BNP-led 18-party alliance called daylong nationwide general strike for today and tomorrow (Monday), demanding immediate return of BNP organising secretary M Ilias Ali and his car driver to their families.
Ilias and his driver Ansar Ali have remained untraced since April 17 midnight from the capital.
BNP blames the ruling party men and security agencies for the mysterious disappearance’ of Ilias and his driver. But the government denies the allegation.
At the press conference, Fakhrul said tougher programmes will be thrown if Ilias was not returned within Monday, the last day of two-day hartal.
He said the present government did not make any independent and neutral probe into the incidents of ‘enforced’ disappearance abduction and secret killing taken place during its rule.
The BNP acting secretary general alleged that the incidents of abduction, enforced disappearance and secret killing were taking place under the state patronage.
Fakhrul said there had been a wave of protests both at home and abroad over Ilias’ enforced disappearance, but the government was still reluctant.
He said national and international human rights organisations had already decried the disappearances in Bangladesh, including that of Ilias Ali.
Fakhrul said the way the ruling party was running the country was very bad. "Even then it wants to return to power through holding elections under a blueprint.”
Asked whether BNP would go to the international court over Ilias’ disappearance issue, Fakhrul said it was there in their mind and were consulting lawyers.
Turning to today’s hartal, the BNP acting secretary general said over 455 leaders and workers of the opposition were arrested and over 512 injured across the country during the shutdown.
He strongly protested the arrest, filing of false cases and attack on the opposition activists by police during the hartal hours and demanded immediate unconditional release of the arrested leaders and workers.
Fakhrul also protested the killing of BNP activist, Jahangir Alam Khokon, in Laxmipur district.
He blamed Awami League activist Qushem Zehad for the killing and demanded his arrest and exemplary punishment. He alleged that AL activists carried out the attack following provocative statements by the Home Minister.
On Jahangirnagar University incident, he alleged that the activists of pro-Awami League Chhatra League aided by police swooped on the students who were carrying out a movement demanding the resignation of its vice chancellor.
BNP leaders Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Amanullah Aman, Barrister Mahbubuddin Khokon, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Nazimuddin Alam, Abdus Salam and Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel were, among others, present at the press conference.
