Jahangirnagar University, May 1 (UNB) - The general students of Jahangirnagar University on Tuesday started a fast-unto-death on the campus demanding resignation of Vice Chancellor Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir.

The students demonstrating under the banners of 'Jahangirnagar Sangskritik Jote' and 'Sontrasher Birudhdhe Jahangirnagar' began the hunger strike at 11 am.

Earlier, the Sangskritik Jote activists brought out a procession around 11:30am. More than 500 students of the university took part in the procession.

Besides, New Age Editor Nurul Kabir, Columnist Rehnuma Ahmed, lawmaker and noted actress Tarana Halim, singer Krisna Koli, actress Banya Mirza and other noted personalities have expressed their solidarity with the demonstrating students.

The students decided to hold the fast-unto-death programme to protest assault on some cultural activists by Bangladesh Chhatra League men on April 28.

Teachers, disloyal to the VC, under the banner of ‘Shikkhak Somaj’ have been continuing demonstration for the last few months to press home their demands, including the resignation of the VC.

Shikkhak Samaj has been demanding the resignation of VC Prof Sharif Enamul Kabir since the murder of Zubair Ahmed, an English department student, on January 9.

On Friday, the authorities of the Jahangirnagar University banned any kind of siege programme on the campus as pro- and- anti-VC teachers took an opposing stance over the demand of the VC’s resignation.
