
Dhaka, May 2 (UNB) – BNP’s giant lawyers on Wednesday made an abortive move before the High Court to secure ad interim anticipatory bails for its front-ranking leaders, including acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, facing two cases on charges of violence during the April 29 shutdown.
As the petition moved before a division bench, presiding judge Siddiqur Rahman Miah informed them of its preoccupation with listed cases and asked them to get the petition listed first and come on Sunday for hearing.
Replying to the bench, Barrister Moudud Ahmed pressed for hearing the unlisted petition today terming it an urgent matter.
By the time, co-judge AKM Shahidul Huq felt embarrassed sans explanation to hear the petition.
Later, the BNP lawyers moved to the other HC division bench headed by Justice M Enayetur Rahim. But the bench also expressed their inability to hear the anticipatory bail petition under section 498 CrPC.
Among others, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Zainul Abedin, former SCBA president Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mian, advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury, appeared for the accused BNP leaders.
Earlier, in the morning, the law enforcers, including elite force Rab, threw a foolproof security blanket in and around the apex court precinct with prison vans ready at different points to carry possible arrestees.
On Sunday night, Tejgaon police filed a case against 44 leaders and activists of the BNP-led 18-party alliance for torching a vehicle near the Prime Minister's Office that day.
The accused include Mirza Fakhrul, party standing committee members Dr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, MK Anwar, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Hannan Shah and Sadeque Hossain Khoka, party joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, party MP Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, Liberal Democratic Party president Oli Ahmed and city nayeb-e-ameer of Jamaat–e-Islami Mokbul Hossain.
On the same day, Shahbagh police accused 28 opposition leaders in a case in connection with the bomb blasts on the secretariat compound, with Mirza Fakhrul the principal accused.
