Dhaka, May 6 (UNB) – The BNP-led 18-party alliance will stage demonstrations and hold protest rallies in all the cities, including capital Dhaka, and district headquarters on May 9 to press for the return of ‘disappeared’ BNP leader M Ilias Ali.
BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed announced the fresh agitation programmes at a press conference at its Nayapaltan central office at around 5:20pm.
Announcing the programmes, Moudud warned that they would announce a harsher movement on May 9 if the government does not return Ilias Ali, release the arrested leaders and workers of the 18-pary alliance and withdraw the cases filed against its leaders and workers, including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He said the Awami League government has sketched out a blueprint to escape public wraths for its failure in all sectors, signing deals ignoring the country’s interests, soaring prices of essentials and hiking gas, power, and water tariffs.
Renewing the allegation that government agencies picked up Ilias Ali, Moudud demanded the immediate return of M Ilias Ali.
She slammed the government for filing ‘false’ cases against the 18-party leaders and activists, including Mirza Fakhrul, arresting its leaders and workers, including BNP joint secretary general Ruhul kabir Rizvi.
“The government has done all these things to implement its plot,” Moudud said demanding the withdrawal of the cases and unconditional release of the leaders and workers of the 18-party alliance.
The BNP leader warned that the leaders and workers of the 18-party alliance will turn the ongoing movement into a mass upsurge.
Earlier, the opposition alliance enforced hartal for five days in two spells to press home their demand.
It enforced countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for three days on the trot on April 22-24 in the first spell while on April 29-30 in the second spell to press for finding out Ilias Ali who along with his car driver went missing on the night of April 17.
Besides, BNP enforced a daylong shutdown in Sylhet division on April 19.
The main opposition also held countrywide demonstrations on April 26, April 28 and May 6 (today) demanding the return of M Ilias Ali and his car driver to their families unharmed.
Today’s demonstration was also to press for the withdrawal of ‘false’ cases filed against BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other leaders of the 18-party alliance and also the release of arrested BNP leaders, including Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
The demonstration also demanded an end to enforced disappearances, killings and repression.
Ilias Ali, a former MP and BNP organising secretary, went missing along with his driver on the midnight of April 17. BNP blamed security agencies for the mysterious disappearance of Ilias Ali, an allegation denied by the government.
