News - Inflation still at much higher level: Debapriya
Dhaka, May 7 (UNB) - Distinguished fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya on Monday said there is nothing to be overenthusiastic over the current inflation scenario.

“Inflation is still at a much higher level in Bangladesh,” he told reporters at a pre-budget press conference at the CPD conference room when asked his comment on the recent data released by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) on inflation.

Debapriya also said inflation situation will largely depend on Taka’s stability against the US dollar. “We don’t think the inflation problem has been solved… inflation will hover around 10 percent in the next couple of months.”

The BBS statistics recently showed that inflation slowed to single digit on point-to-point basis in April, for the first time in 13 months, following a drop in rice prices.

Overall inflation fell by 0.17 percentage point to 9.93 percent last month from 10.10 percent in March.

Inflation jumped to double digit in March last year and continued for 13 months.

CPD executive director Prof Mustafizur Rahman, research head Dr Fahmida Khatun, senior research fellow Dr Khondaker Golam Moazzem, director (dialogue and communication) Anisatul Fatema Yousuf, and other CPD team members were present.
