Dhaka, May 8 (UNB) - BNP front-ranking leader Nazrul Islam Khan on Tuesday said the onion of the international community is against the ‘Awami League ‘government’s move to hold the next general election unilaterally.
He made the remark while addressing a protest rally in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in the afternoon.
Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, the youth front of BNP, organised the demonstration as part of its countrywide programme in cities and districts, demanding the return of missing BNP organising secretary M Ilias Ali and withdrawal of “false” cases filed against top leaders of BNP and its front and associate organisations, including Jubo Dal.
It was also meant for demanding the release of the alliance’s arrested leaders, including BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Addressing the protest rally, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, during her recent visit to Dhaka, stressed finding out a solution to political stalemate through discussions to hold credible and participatory elections in Bangladesh.
Nazrul said she (Hillary) knows very well that BNP will not participate in the general election if it is held under the Awami League government.
The BNP leader mentioned that Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus and Fazle Hasan Abed of Brac have stated that the people of Bangladesh want elections under a non-party caretaker government and polls under a partisan government will not be acceptable.
He said BNP is now carrying out a movement over all national issues, including the major problems people now facing, restoration of caretaker government and the return of disappeared Ilias Ali.
Nazrul Islam said anti-government issues are now piling up as people are getting united amid the government’s increasing failure and growing repression on the opposition.
He alleged that the government is creating issues one after another to divert public attention saying that it will not work ultimately. “The Awami League government is now a setting sun. It’s time is running out,” he said.
People want a change and a new leadership, Nazrul said adding that change is inevitable.
Chaired by Jubo Dal senior vice president Abdus Salam Azad, the rally was addressed, among others, by Asadzuman Ripon, Habibur Rahman Habib and Giasuddin Chowdhury Khokon.
