
Dhaka, May 8 (UNB) – Four committees will be formed to take steps for installing boundary pillars on river banks, aiming to put an end to river encroachment.
This was disclosed at the 17th meeting of a taskforce on river protection held at Shipping Ministry with taskforce chairman and Minister Shajahan Khan in the chair on Tuesday.
After the meeting, the minister said local MPs will act as advisers to the committees.
The committees, to be led by Deputy Commissioners of Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur and Munshiganj, will also monitor whether the pillars are installed maintaining the set standard.
One representative from Land Survey department, BIWTA, Public Works department, Bangladeshi Paribesh Bachao Andolon and the mayors/chairmen of the respective areas will be there in the committees.
The committees have been asked to complete their activities by June 30 and submit progress reports at the next meeting of the taskforce.
The taskforce was formed for giving suggestions, recommendations and implementation plans for maintaining the navigability and natural flow of the country’s important rivers.
Shajahan Khan told reporters that a section of influential people are obstructing the installation of boundary pillars. “Illegal lifting of sand is also going on at some points. Today’s meeting decided to take actions against them,” the minister said.
The meeting was informed that Water Development Board, after consultation with the Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka, would take steps for demolishing illegal structures on river banks from Sadarghat to Gabtali.
The meeting decided that another committee would be formed for keeping the Buriganga, Shitalakhya, Balu and Turag rivers free from pollution and management of its wastages. The BIWTA chairman will act as convenor of the committee.
The meeting was told that 2,800, out of 6,854 boundary pillars in Dhaka, 4,491 out of 5,041 in Narayanganj, 268 out of 800 in Gazipur and 560 out of 604 have already been installed. Works on installation of other pillars are going on.
The meeting was also informed that the construction work on Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) at Savar would be completed by December next year.
Land Minister Rezaul Karim Hira, State Minister for Law Quamrul Islam, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources Ministry Oabidul Moktadir Chowdhury were, among others, present.
