BEIJING, MAY 9 (AP/UNB) - Blind activist Chen Guangcheng has drawn a global media spotlight after setting off tensions between the U.S. and China. But he's almost unknown at home - and the Chinese government is working to keep it that way.
State-controlled media outlets have occasionally released editorials on him to purvey the government line. Censors, meanwhile, have been trying to minimize references to Chen on social media in a cat-and-mouse game as users turn to ever more obscure, coded references to the activist.
Chen's name has appeared in some state-controlled media, but mostly in commentaries that criticize the U.S. government as meddling in Chinese affairs and insinuating that Chen is being used a tool.
