Dhaka, May 9 (UNB) - President Zillur Rahman on Wednesday called upon the United Nations to include ‘Bangla’ as one of its official languages showing respect to Bangla-speaking people who had sacrificed lives for their mother tongue.
“I hope that the UN will consider with importance the issue of including Bangla as an official language respecting Bangla-speaking people,” he said while addressing the special convocation of Dhaka University held at Nabab Nawab Ali Senate Bhaban.
Zillur, also Chancellor of the DU, conferred honorary Doctor of Laws degree upon Unesco Director General Irina Bokova at the convocation.
Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, members of its Senate and Syndicate, professors, teachers and students of the university were present at the convocation.
Addressing the convocation, President Zillur said UNESCO has been playing an important role in promoting education, social development, science and cultural improvement in Bangladesh.
“The historical decision the UNESCO has taken declaring February 21 as the International Mother Language Day showing respects to the martyrs who sacrificed lives in 1952 for mother tongue has immensely inspired and stimulated us,” he said.
The President recalled that UNESCO still continued contributing to the country’s development through declaring the Sundarbans as the world heritage and attaching historical Bagerhat Satgambuj Mosque and Paharpur Buddha Birar with the parts of the world heritage.
“I hope that UNESCO will also come forward in establishing Bangla as one of the official languages in the UN,” he said.
Welcoming the UNESCO boss to Bangladesh, the President felt happy conferring the Doctorate of Laws degree upon her. “I believe it (conferment of degree) will be a bridge between UNESCO and the University of Dhaka.”
Zillur also recalled that UNESCO has been playing a pivotal role in promoting global education, culture, communication and information as well as social and human sciences, particularly in developing countries since its inception.
