Body formed to monitor poly bag ban enforcement

Dhaka, May 09 (UNB) - A 10-member central committee was formed on Wednesday to conduct, coordinate and monitor enforcement of the 38-day countrywide ban on polythene shopping bag.
The secretary to the Ministry of Environment and Forest was made convener of the Central Enforcement Monitoring Committee (CEMC) and the deputy secretary (Environment-2) of the ministry its member secretary.
The eight other members of the committee were inducted from the Cabinet Division, the Public Administration Ministry, Department of Information under the Information Ministry, directors general (DG) of the Public Administration Ministry and the Home Ministry, DoE (Department of Environment) DG, directors of BGB and police headquarters (HQs) and representatives from BFCCI and DCCI, A PID handout said.
It said Deputy Commissioners (DC) and Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNO) will conduct, coordinate and monitor the activities of mobile courts employed to enforce the ban on poly bags in their respective districts and upazilas.
Earlier, the government, in an order, banned production, import, marketing, sale, exhibition for sale, stock, distribution, transport for commercial purpose and commercial use of poly bags from May 2 to June 10 across the country with the view to discouraging use of shopping bags made of polythene for protection of environment.
