News - Padma Project: Malaysia’s proposal to govt at month end
Dhaka, May 10 (UNB) - Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday said that Malaysia will send a proposal to the government towards the end of the current month for final agreement on financing the Padma Bridge project.

Earlier, on April 10, Obaidul Quader and Special Envoy of Malaysian Prime Minister on Infrastructure of India and South Asia Dato Seri Samy Vellu signed a MoU in Kuala Lumpur on cooperation for the construction of the Padma Bridge and other infrastructure projects in Bangladesh.

Talking to reporters at his ministry, the Communications Minister said the government has already investigated the alleged corruption in the appointment of consultants for the Padma Bridge.

Besides, he said the government has also removed the Communications Minister and the Project Director to ensure appropriate investigation into the matter.

Asked about the reported involvement of SAHCO in the corruption, Obaidul Quader said the Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating into all these matters.

He said since the World Bank is biding time to take a decision about its loan commitment, the government has signed a MoU with the Malaysian government to finance the project.

The World Bank suspended its loan commitment of US$ 1.2 billion over alleged corruption in appointing consultants for the Padma Bridge project.
