Dhaka, May 10 (UNB) - Rights groups on Thursday demanded stopping the fiduciary management role of World Bank in Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund (BCCRF) by 2013.
The demand came from a press conference jointly organised by six civil society climate networks and 11 organisations at National Press Club in the city.
Rezaul Karim Chowdhury of EquityBD, Prodip Roy of OK Society, Progoti Chakma of BIPNetCCBD, Mostafa Kamal Akanda of EquityBD, Ahmed Swapan Mahmud of VOICE and Khokan Sikder of CDP spoke at the press conference.
The rights activists also demanded forming an independent institution with democratic ownership for all climate fund management and expressed their concern that a conspiracy is going on to extend present role of World Bank in the BCCRF until 2018.
They said the democratic ownership means with participation of representatives from the government and the opposition party, climate victims, local government and media.
The speakers urged the government to make it clear how much service charge the World Bank has currently been taking from the BCCRF (1 to 4 percent or 9 percent).
Their demands also include ensuring transparency in all projects of BCCRF and showing a political will to get rid of conspiracy of donor darling consultants and bureaucrat’s nexus who are trying to keep and extend World Bank role for longer.
The networks and organizations, who have organised the press conference, are Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), Climate Finance Governance Network (CFGN), Campaign for Sustainable Rural Livelihood (CSRL), Climate Change Development Forum (CCDF), Equity and Justice Working Group (Equity), Network for Climate Change in Bangladesh (NCCB), Arpon, Bangladesh Bhumihin Somity (BBS), Bangladesh Krishok Federation (BKF), Coastal Development Partnership (CDP), Centre for Global Change (CGC), Kishani Shoba, Manush Manusher Jonno, Media Foundation for Trade and Development (MFTD), OK Society, SDO, Sirajgong Flood Forum, Shurakka O Aggragoti Foundation (SAF) and VOICE.
