KABUL, Afghanistan, MAY 10(AP/UNB) - Afghan security officials say six suicide attackers wearing police uniforms have killed five people in the country's east.

Paktika provincial police chief Dawlit Khan Zadran says the men were trying to pass through a security checkpoint in Yayakhil district Thursday when police became suspicious.

He says police told the men to stop and a gunbattle broke out when they refused.

Zadran says the fighting lasted for about an hour. He says four attackers detonated their suicide vests and two were shot and killed.

He says the blasts killed two civilians, two local police officers and one national police officer. Another two local police officers and one national police officer were wounded.

Zadran says the men were planning to attack a government office.
