News - IO gets warning note for parrying questions
Dhaka, May 10 (UNB) -The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Thursday cautioned the investigation officer not to parry the questions asked by the   defence counsel during cross–examinations on the pretext of ‘there’s no such information in my record’.

“If you are asked to answer what’s the result of 5 plus 2, can you say it’s not there in your record?” the tribunal said, adding, “It’s a fact you doesn’t know everything, but you’ll have to answer to the point sans sidestep.”

The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice M Nizamul Huq, came up with the warning note as investigation officer ASP M Helal Uddin repeatedly answering in the same words when asked where from the CBS television news aired its programme and whether he had conducted any investigation into it.

Sometimes, the IO had to answer the questions after screening the material exhibits of video footage from NBC, CBS, ATN Bangla and Ekushey TV on atrocities perpetrated by the anti-liberation forces in collaboration with the Pakistan Junta during the Liberation War in 1971.

Replying to a volley of questions, Helal said although there was no such footage of the atrocities perpetrated by Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee in the NBC and CBS new reels, the evil role played by the anti-liberation forces across the country were found. Besides, NBC and CBS had helped identify the culprits and brining them to justice.

IO Helal said it was not a fact that the prosecution had presented to the tribunal the doctored NBC television news footage on Bangladesh Liberation War only to make the environment heavy and create emotion.

The IO’s cross-examination continued for the sixth day.

The tribunal will resume on May 13.
