Shariatpur, May 10 (UNB) - About 60 people were injured in a series of clashes between two rival groups of Awami League (AL) at seven villages in Jazira upazila on Thursday.
Police and local sources said supporters of AL leader and Barokandi UP chairman Sirajul Islam Sarder beat up several supporters of Safiuddin Khalifa, AL leader and ex-UP chairman, recently.
In a bid to take revenge, over 200 supporters of Safiuddin attacked the house of their rival Harun Kotwal at Kotwal Kandi village, which led to the clash at 6am.
The melee later spread to Bepari Kandi, Mridha Kandi and Majhi Kandi villages of Barokandi union and Molla Kandi, Fakir Kandi and Rari Kandi villages of Paler Char union.
Over 100 houses were ransacked and looted and over 100 cocktails were blasted during the four hour long clashes, said local people.
Receiving information, police from Jazira and Shariatpur rushed in the brought the situation under control.
Both the groups lodged separate complaint with thana.
However, no case was filed and none arrested till writing of this report at 9pm on Thursday.
Of the injured, 10 were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
