ALGIERS, Algeria, MAY 11 (AP/UNB) - Preliminary election results released by political parties have indicated strong showings by the historic government party and an Islamist alliance.
The National Liberation Front, once the sole party in the country, expects to take more than a 100 seats out of the 462-member parliament, party officials told local media Friday.
Officials from the Islamist "Green Alliance" of three parties expect to take slightly less.
Algerians voted Thursday in legislative elections described by the government as its response to the Arab Spring reform movement.
State media has trumpeted an official turnout rate of 42.9 percent for all registered voters inside and outside the country as an improvement over the 36 percent that voted in 2007.
Turnout in the main cities was low and hovered around 30 percent.
