
Dhaka, May 11 (UNB) – Unesco Director General Irina Bokova has said the International Mother Language Institute in Bangladesh will play an important role in exercising, preserving, researching and developing mother tongues of all the countries across the globe.
She made the remarks while visiting the institute in the city on Friday.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Education Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, Unesco Education Programme Specialist Kiichi Oyasu and Director General of the International Mother Language Institute Prof. Dr Zinat Imtiaz Ali were present.
The Education Minister said the government is working to make the International Mother Language Institute a world-class institution and sought assistance from Unesco for its development.
In reply, the Unesco DG assured him of providing all sorts of assistance for its development.
Earlier, Irina inaugurated a language fair on the ground floor of the institute where letters of 40 countries have been put on display.
