
Savar, May 12 (UNB) - A female garment worker was killed and 100 people, including six journalists and 15 policemen, were injured in a fierce clash between garment workers and cops at Ashulia here on Saturday following the death rumour of a fellow worker.
The unruly workers blocked Baipail-Tangail Highway for several hours and vandalised and torched nearly 50 passing vehicles. Vehicular movement on the highway remained suspended for nearly four hours, causing immense sufferings to the commuters.
The deceased was identified as Kamrunnahar, an operator of ‘Opex Sweater’ garment factory. Sources said Kamrunahar was critically injured when a truck hit her during the clash between the workers and law enforcers.
Contacted over phone, office-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station Badrul Alam confirmed the death. Police said several hundred workers of Hamim Group staged demonstrations inside their factory in the morning following the death rumour of its store keeper Salman.
Earlier, on Thursday evening, Hamim Group director Mofakkharul Islam allegedly beat up Salman and handed him over to police as he used cell phone during working hours. The fellow workers burst into anger when they went to office in the morning and heard Salman was tortured to death by the authorities.
Angered by the death rumour, they started vandalising and looting the valuables of the factory. They also set fire to a godown of the Hamim Group during the mayhem.
At one stage, the workers took to the streets and put barricade on the Baipail-Tangail Highway. Several hundred workers from Dampara, Jirabo, Narsinghapur, Pukurpar, Kathgara, Gazirchat, Shimultala areas also gathered in Abdullahpur-EPZ area and staged demonstrations by vandalising vehicles on the road.
Clashes between police and the workers erupted at about 10:00am after the law enforcers charged baton to disperse them and restore vehicular movement on the highway. Police lobbed teargas canisters while the workers retaliated by pelting them with brickbats, leaving 100 people, including 15 cops and six journalists injured in the hour-long clash.
Over 100 garment factories were shut to avert any untoward incident following the violence. The protesters snatched some TV cameras and destroyed those of Desh TV, NTV and Mohona TV.
Additional police, Rab members have been deployed in the area as tension heightened.
