Dhaka, May 12 (UNB) - Terming the case filed against 45 leaders and activists of the BNP-led 18-party alliance ‘preplanned’, the main opposition BNP on Saturday said there was no consistency between the chargsheet of the case and the FIR.
BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan at a press briefing at party chairperson’s Gulshan office said the two cases filed against the BNP-led 18-party alliance leaders were false, fabricated and ill-motivated.
He said, ”The statement of the driver and helper of the bus which was torched during the April 29 hatral was not mentioned in the chargesheet, but it was mentioned who was the owner of the bus. There was no detailed information on the road permit of the bus either and its registration number.”
"The government has filed the two false cases against senior opposition leaders to divert people's attention from various burning issues, including journalist Sagar-Runi murder, BNP leader Ilias Ali disappearance and the demand for restoring the caretaker government system.”
"We urge the government to withdraw the false cases and the chargesheet immediately," he added.
Police filed the two cases against senior opposition leaders over exploding bombs on the Secretariat compound and torching of a vehicle in front of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) during the Apr 29 general strike.
Police on Thursday pressed charges against BNP's acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 44 others in the arson case claiming that their investigation found the involvement of those. The charges said the accused leaders of the BNP-led 18-party alliance had backed the strikers who allegedly set the bus on fire in front of the PMO.
