Dhaka, May 12 (UNB) - Journalist leaders on Saturday demanded that the government give proper compensation to the family members of journalist Bibhas Chandra Saha who was killed in a road accident in the city on Friday.

They also demanded withdrawal of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Ramna Division) Mahtab Uddin and officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi Police Station Moniruzzaman in connection with charging batons and firing bullets on the demonstrators who were protesting the death of Bibash after the accident.

Bibhash, a senior reporter of the English daily The Independent, was killed when a bus of “Maitri Paribahan” hit his motorcycle from behind at Dhanmondi on Friday afternoon.

Protesting the incident, members of Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) along with other journalists brought out a procession from in front of the National Press Club on Saturday.

They also formed a human chain to press home their demands.

Vehicles stayed off the roads from Matsya Bhaban to Paltan Crossing when the journalists were observing their programmes till 1 pm.

Presidents of two factions of BFUJ Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury and Ruhul Amin Gazi, DUJ secretary general Shaban Mahmud, DRU president Shawkat Hossain Badsha and secretary general Sajjad Alam Tapu, CRAB secretary Isaraf Hossain Esa, CRAB Samity president Sabbir Mahmud, among others, addressed the human chain presided over by CRAB president Akhtaruzzaman Lablu.

The journalist leaders demanded that the government mete out punishment to the bus driver responsible for the accident and give proper compensation to the deceased’s family.
