Narayanganj, May 12 (UNB) - At least 30 people, including cops, were injured in a clash between police and locals over the eviction of grabbers of a Railway land at the city`s Sirajuddowla Road on Saturday.
Police fired 40 rounds of teargas canisters and 100 rubber bullets to quell the situation.
Locals said an eviction team, led by Deputy Secretary of Railway Ministry Ahmedul Haque and Executive Magistrate Abdur Rouf Talukder, assisted by high officials of Railway and the district administration and police, started demolishing dwelling houses, markets and other illegal structures erected on a vast Railway land at Kalirbazar adjacent to Narayanganj Rail Station at 10:30 am.
After their bulldozer razed a few shops to the ground at Friends Market built illegally on Railway land, the occupants aided by locals, swooped on the eviction team, triggering a fierce clash which left 30 people, including Narayanganj Model Thana OC and some constables, injured.
As the clash escalated to the entire Railway Station area, addition police and RAB were called in.
After having failed to control the situation, police fired 40 teargas shells and 100 shotgun bullets to drive the attackers out and restart the demolition.
