50 fishermen kidnapped by robbers in Sundarbans

Bagerhat, May 13 (UNB) – Bandits kidnapped 50 fishermen and looted their valuables   worth about Tk. 10 lakh at Hormal canal of east Sundarbans on Saturday night.  

Ten fishermen were also injured by the forest robbers in Sharankhola upazila.

The abducted fishermen hailed from different areas in Bagerhat and Barguna districts.

Fishermen, who returned from Bay and local trawler owners, told UNB that 15/20 robbers attacked 50 trawlers and looted fishing net and fishes.

They also took away two trawlers and kidnapped 50 fishermen.

Prior to leaving the spot, they demanded Tk. 50,000 as ransom per head.

They threatened to kill all the fishermen if the ransom was not paid within a week.

KM Mamunur Rashid, Staff Officer (Operation) of Coast Guard Mongla (West Zone) told UNB that Coast Guard members began drive in   Sundarbans areas to rescue the victims and nab the robbers.

Police Super Khandaker Rafiqul Islam told UNB that he ordered the policemen of the concerned police stations to take necessary steps.
