Savar, May 13 (UNB) – FBCCI chief and chairman of Hamim Group AK Azad was among 100 people injured as garments workers locked in a series of clashes with police again on Sunday following Saturday’s violence over the death rumour of a fellow-worker.
Police and witnesses said a group of unruly workers, equipped with sticks and stone chips swooped on AK Azad as soon as he got down from his jeep in front of Narsinghapur unit of Hamim Group`s several ready-made garments (RMG) units at 9 am.
As Azad attempted to pacify the agitating workers of his RMG unit a group of unidentified youths hurled stone chips at him leaving him injured in the head. Police rescued him from the grip of the crowd and rushed him to nearby BEPZA Hospital.
Police and hospital sources said Azad, also the owner of `Azad Products` and president of Bangladesh Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), received treatment at BEPZA Hospital and was released a couple of hours later. He became weak as he was hit in the head and bleeding profusely, they said, adding he is now out of danger and recovering.
The attackers were demanding release of Salman, knitting man of Hamim Group who was picked up by police during violence at Hamim Group`s Banglabazar RMG unit in Ashulia on Saturday afternoon.
However, Salman was released on bail at 12 noon.
Angered at his arrest and death rumour of a worker of another garments factory several hundred workers of Hamim Group and 100 other RMG units blocked Abdullahpur bypass road at 6 am and vandalised and torched over 50 passing vehicles.
Vehicular movement on the highway remained suspended for six hours, causing immense sufferings to commuters.
The RMG workers of Narsinghapur, Banglabazar, Gorat and Jamgara in separate groups carried out the fresh attacks on the law enforcers, vandalized vehicles and burnt tyres at different points amid chases and counter-chases.
Police lobbed teargas shells and fired rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.
OC (investigation) of Ashulia Police Station Kamal Hossain and four constables were among the 100 injured.
