KABUL, May 13 (AP/UNB) - Authorities say a gunman has shot and killed a top member of the Afghan peace council in Kabul.

It is another blow to efforts to negotiate a political resolution to the decade-long war.

Mohammad Zahir, who is head of the Kabul police department's criminal investigation division, says former Taliban official turned Afghan peace negotiator Arsala Rahmani was killed Sunday in the west part of the city.

Zahir says an unknown attacker in a vehicle fatally shot Rahmani who was traveling in another vehicle on his way to work.

The former head of the council, Burhanuddin Rabbani, was assassinated on Sept. 20. Rabbani, a former president of Afghanistan, was killed by a suicide bomber posing as a peace emissary from the Taliban.
