Over 2,000 opposition men sued for Ctg violence
Chittagong, May 14 (UNB) – Six cases have been filed against over 2,000 activists of the BNP-led 18 party alliance in connection with Sunday’s violence in the port city that left over 150 propel, including 50 cops, injured.
Of the cases, four were filed against 1,700 opposition activists in Kotwali Police Station on Monday morning while the rest two with Khulsi Police Station on Sunday night.
City Jamaat Ameer ANM Shamsul Islam MP, BNP central committee member and Chittagong North district unit general secretary Aslam Chowdhury, Rangunia upazila Chairman Abu Hasnat, former Jubo Dal leader Abul Hashem Bakar, Swechchasebak Dal leader SK Khoda Totan, former CCC councilor Mohammad Shah Alam and Chhatra Dal leader Quamrul Islam were among the accused in the cases.
Sub-inspector Jafar, in-charge of Patharghata police camp and sub-inspector Harun, in-charge of Boxirhat police camp filed two separate cases with Kotwali thana on charge of assaulting law enforcers and creating anarchy in the port city during the violence.
Besides, sub-inspector Shah Alam and assistant sub-inspector Rafiq also filed two separate cases under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act with the same police station against 50-60 named and 600 unnamed opposition men.
Wali Uddin Akbar, Khulshi Police Station sub-inspector, filed another case against 150 opposition activists on charge of damaging Lalkhan Bazar market and torching vehicle on Sunday.
Later, Sattya Talpatra, general secretary of Amin Shopping Centre at Lalkhan Bazar, filed the sixth case against 200 unnamed people with the Khulshi police station on charger of vandalising the market.
Meanwhile, 29 activists who were arrested during the clash were shown arrested in the two cases filed under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act, said police.
At least 150 people, including 50 policemen, were injured in a series of clashes between the activists of the BNP-led 18-party alliance and law enforcers in the port city on Sunday.
The agitating opposition men also set fire to four passing vehicles and vandalised 50 others as the violence spilled into different areas of the city.
Due to the clashes, the BNP-led 18-party alliance could not bring out its scheduled mass procession in the city, aiming to press for the safe return of BNP’s missing leader M Ilias Ali and his car driver.
The trouble began when police intercepted a procession of Islami Chhatra Shibir at Kazir Dewri while they were coming to BNP’s Nasiman Bhaban office at Nur Ahmed Road to join the mass procession of the alliance.
