
Dhaka, May 14 (UNB) – Against the backdrop of changing political situation in Myanmar, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday said Dhaka is willing to bolster relations with Yangon in the greater interest of the two neighbouring countries and the welfare of their people.
The Prime Minister said Dhaka gives a great importance to stronger relations with Yangon as the country is the first stepping-stone for Bangladesh to build bridge with South East Asia.
Sheikh Hasina said this when outgoing Ambassador of Myanmar to Bangladesh U Min Lwin made a farewell call on her at her Gonobhaban residence.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said Sheikh Hasina greeted the envoy for his valuable contributions during his stay in Dhaka in improving the bilateral relations between the two countries.
She also expressed satisfaction over settling the longstanding issue of demarcating the maritime boundary.
The premier said her government is keen to build a vibrant relation with Myanmar against the backdrop of its changing political situation.
She stressed the need for putting in place a multimodal regional connectivity adding that easy communication would facilitate boosting regional trade and strengthen cooperation in other areas of economy to alleviate poverty from South Asia.
Hasina appreciated the assurance of the Myanmar President to resume the repatriation of his country’s Rohingya refugees living in two camps of Bangladesh for the last two decades and called for expeditious action in this regard.
She also expressed her government’s interest to enhance cooperation with Myanmar in energy sector saying Bangladesh is keen to import surplus hydroelectric power from Rakhine and Chin states of Myanmar at mutual convenient rate.
Hasina urged the Myanmar government to remove policy barriers to import more Bangladeshi pharmaceuticals and consider importing Bangladeshi products, including RMG, electronic equipment, jute and jute products, leather goods.
She referred to the excellent historic relation, bondage, cultural traditions and people-to-people interactions and common aspiration saying direct road and rail connectivity would give a tremendous boost to trade opportunities between the two countries.
Expressing happiness on the recent revision of Air Service Agreement and inclusion of Private Sector airlines for services between Bangladesh and Myanmar, Sheikh Hasina hoped that direct flight between Dhaka/Chittagong and Yangon would resume soon.
The Prime Minister renewed her invitation to Myanmar President Thein Sein and Madam Khin Khin Win to visit Bangladesh, and hoped that the visit will take place shortly at a mutually convenient time.
In response, the envoy praised the role and dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to overall development of Bangladesh as well as regional cooperation.
