Madaripur, May 14 (UNB) – A court here on Monday sentenced four people to death and another to life term imprisonment for killing a man 12 years back.

The condemned convicts are Ferdous Khandakar, Liakat Beldar, Alam and Shona Mia of South Crokchar village in Shibchar upazila.

The lifer is Shima Akter, wife of victim Hafez Chokdar.

Ferdous and Shima were present in the dock when the district and sessions judge declared the judgment. The remaining three were tried in absentia.

According to the prosecution, Shima Akter wife of Hafez Chokdar of Silarchar village in Sadar upazila developed an extramarital affair with her neighbour Liakat Beldar.

On September 14, 2000, Shima with the help of Liakat and his three friends strangulated Hafez Chokdar to death and dumped his body in the Arial Kha River.

Police recovered the body following the confessional statement of Liakat’s friend Ferdous.

A case was filed with Shibchar Police Station in this connection five days after the killing.

After examining the records and witnesses, district and sessions judge Bimol Chandra Shikdar handed down the verdict.
