
Dhaka, May 16 (UNB) - The Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) on Wednesday agreed in principle on formation of the 8th wage board for the newspaper industry.
The agreement came at a meeting with the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official Ganobhaban residence in the evening.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Prime Minister’s press secretary Abul Kalam Azad said that the final decision to this end would be taken after the discussion with the all stakeholders concerned.
He said that the NOAB leaders discussed in detail with the Prime Minister various issues relating to the newspaper industry. The Prime Minister gave a patient hearing to their problems.
The NOAB leaders also greeted Hasina, as according to a Gallup poll, she (Sheikh Hasina) has 77 percent approval rating by the countrymen. The NOAB leaders also congratulated her on Bangladesh's recent maritime victory over Myanmar.
Washington- based Gallup, renowned for predicting US election results and conducting the US presidents' approval ratings, also ranked Sheikh Hasina seventh in its survey conducted in 21 countries of Asia and the Pacific Rim in 2011.
NOAB president and The Independent editor Mahbubul Alam, Samokal editor Golam Sarwar, News Today editor Reazuddin Ahmed, Ittefaq editor Anwar Hossain Monju, Prothom Alo editor Motiur Rahman, Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam, Sangbad editor Altamas Kabir, Janakantha editor Atiqullah Khan Masud, Manabjamin editor Matiur Rahman Chowdhury and Bhorer Kagoj editor Shyamal Dutta, among others, were present at the meeting.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Prime Minister said the 8th Wage Board for the newspaper industry would be announced very soon.
The Prime Minister said this when the newly-elected executive committee of Dhaka Union of Journalist (DUJ), led by its President Omar Faruk and General Secretary Shaban Mahmud, called on her at her office.
