Dhaka, May 15 (UNB) - The government Tuesday approved eight projects, involving Tk 117.61 crore to tackle the adverse impacts of the changing climate.
A meeting of the Climate Change Trust Board under the Environment and Forests Ministry approved the projects. Environment and Forests Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud chaired the meeting held at his ministry.
The Department of Environment will implement two projects -- the Community Based Adaptation in the Ecologically Critical Areas through Biodiversity Conservation and Social Projection Project at cost of Tk 15 crore and a Tk 25 crore-Marked Development Initiative Bondhu Cula Improve Cook Stoves Project while the Meteorological Department will implement a Tk 5.4 crore project to develop agriculture weather forecasting system to protect the agriculture from the adverse impacts of climate change.
Bangladesh Agriculture Development Department (BADC) will launch an irrigation project of Tk 28.91 crore to set up rubber dam at Rangunia in Chittagong to ensure food security in the area and the Bangladesh Water Development Board will implement the Arialkha River embankment protection project involving Tk 14.59 at Shibchar upazila in Madaripur.
Palli Daridro Bimochon Foundation (PDBF) will implement the Renewable Energy Development in Remote Off Grid (Char and Haor) Areas in Bangladesh Project of Tk 24.32 crore while Satkhira Zila Parishad will implement a rehabilitation project at Tk 17.7 crore in the district.
Besides, Mymensigh Municipality will implement a project of Tk 14.35 crore to cut water logging in the area.
Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Food and Disaster Management Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque, Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen, chairman of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, Environment and Forests secretary Misbah Ul Alam and Buet pro-vice chancellor Prof Dr Habibur Rahman were, among others, present in the meeting.
