1 more inter-city train connects capital with Sylhet
Dhaka, May 15 (UNB) - As promised by former railway minister Suranjit Sen Gupta Bangladesh Railway on Tuesday launched a new train service that will carry passengers between Dhaka and Sylhet everyday.
Communications Minister Obaidul Quader, also in-charge of the Railway Ministry, inaugurated `Kaloni Express` the new inter-city train, by flagging off it at a simple ceremony at Kamalapur Railway Station in the capital at 3 pm.
Mahmudul Samad Chowdhury, MP elected from Sylhet 2 constituency, Fazle Kabir, secretary of the Railway Ministry and Abu Taher, Director General of railway, were among others, present.
Railway DG Abu Taher told UNB that the express train, named after Kaloni River of Sunamganj, the land of Baul (mystic poet) Shah Abdul Karim, will run between Dhaka and Sylhet twice everyday from Tuesday.
It will leave Dhaka`s Kamalapur Station at 3 pm and reach Sylhet, the city of saints, at 9:25 pm and leave Sylhet Rail Station at 6:40 am and reach Kamalapur Station at 1 pm daily, he said.
It will make brief stopovers at Shayestaganj, Srimangal and Maizganj rail stations on both ways, he informed.
The then Railway Minister Suranjit Sengupta, after inaugurating a new train service in Dhaka-Narayanganj-Joydevpur route in December last year, had promised that another inter-city train service between Dhaka and Sylhet will be launched this year in addition to the existing train services in the important route.
``With the inauguration of `Kaloni Express` today his promise was fulfilled``, he said, adding ``As desired by him (Suranjit Da) Bangladesh Railway has named the train service after Kaloni River which flows down Sunamganj, the birth place of mystic poet Shah Abdul Karim, who died in January, 2010.
